Description

Horden, John (1828-1893); John Sanders (1845-1902). The Moosonee Hymnal, Translated into the Ojibbeway Language by the Right Rev. Bishop of Moosonee [John Horden] and the Rev. John Sanders, Native Missionary to the Ojibbeways of the Diocese of Moosonee. London: S.P.C.K. [Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge] | Printed by Gilbert and Rivington Ld., St. John’s House, Clerkenwell Road, E.C., 1890. pp. 112. 24mo., measuring 15 cm tall. Dark green cloth over boards with black lettering, rules, and illustration to boards. Lightest rubbing to the extremities, very light age-toning to the title page otherwise text-block remains bright, clean, and unmarked with tight, sound binding. Exceptionally well preserved, and exceedingly scarce with no known extant copies available on the market at time of cataloguing. This printing not in Peel (which presently only houses the 1879 edition (Peel #880), and presumably the first printing of this title); available only on microform at Library and Archives Canada. We note that we were unable to locate this – the 1890 printing – amongst any institutional holdings. See Evans, Masinahikan 592, p. 211; Mansell, vol. 254, p. 639; Pilling, Algonquian, p. 565. Rt. Rev. John Horden (1828-1893) was the first bishop of the Anglican diocese of Moosenee. He translated and caused to be printed many works in Canadian Indigenous dialects. We believe this title was first published in 1879/80 by the S.P.C.K.; our offering is the 1890 edition. Near Fine. Hardcover. (#1372) $1,595.00
