First Edition, First Printing. Unpaginated. [pp. 102]. Oblong 12mo., measuring 9.25″ x 6″. Light green illustrated card covers bound with two gold metal bolt bindings. The cover features the image of a toy soldier standing at attention, and which appears in colour on the left margins of each leaf inside. Comprises of 52 numbered pages of unique recipes, all incorporating in one fashion or another the cream products of the Crescent Creamery Company, Limited of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Each recipe is headed by a subtitle, “Crescent Creamery Home Service Bureau, Directed by Graduate Dietician”. The verso of the final recipe in the booklet (Recipe, No. 52) states: “This issue will conclude the publication of our weekly recipe bulletin service. We have issued these recipes for two years, and we hope you have found them both pleasing and practical. Although we are discontinuing the printed service for the present, we would like you to know that if you are desirous of obtaining any specific type of recipe, or general diatetic information, please phone 37-101 and ask for our dietitian, Miss Moore.” We believe this publication to be printed in 1941 based chiefly on reference to the verso of Recipe No. 24, which explicitly references “Hallowe’en, 1941”, and Recipe No. 26 which references a recipe for, “War-Time Cake”. The verso of each recipe card features an exhaustive index of recipes, a suggested “balanced menu”, suggestions for picking, and other cooking hints and tips. Lightest age-toning to the cover, contents bright, clean, and unmarked; near fine. Unusually, this title is not found in Elizabeth Drivers’, Culinary Landmarks – the most authoritative bibliography on the subject of early Canadian cookery material.
