Description

Memling, Hans (1440?-1494). Hans Memling: Quatre-vingt Planches hors texte AVEC DE REPRODUCTIONS D’APRES LES TABLEAUX LES PLUS EMINENTS DU MAITRE / [Hans Memling: Eighty Plates of Text WITH REPRODUCTIONS FROM THE MOST EMINENT PAINTINGS OF THE MASTER (Eight Parts Bound in One Volume). Harlem, Hollande [Holland | Netherlands]: H. Kleinmann & Cie., N.D. [Circa 1897-1907]. Folio. Eighty [80] leaves of gorgeous sepia tone reproductions of notable paintings by Hans Memling nearly always preceded with their original tissue-guards. Contemporary smooth tan utilitarian binding with new endpapers; untrimmed page edges. Slight bowing to front board otherwise the binding remains tight and sound. With the exception of a few date stamps to the margins of a few pages the contents remain clean and unmarked. A hand-written letter from the publisher (Heinrich Kleinmann) accompanies the title where it has been pasted to the verso of the title page of the first bound volume. Signed and dated by Kleinmann himself in “Harlem, 1901”. Very good+ to near fine. Born in Selingstadt (in present-day Germany) no later than 1440, Hans Memling was a German painter in the Early Netherlandish tradition (also known as ‘the Flemish primitives’). An apprentice of Rogier van der Weyden he moved to Flanders where he registered as a resident of Bruges in 1465 presumably following the death of his master with whose work he shares important stylistic qualities. Paula Nuttall (of the Courtauld Institute of Art) writes Memling’s distinctive contribution to portraiture was his use of landscape backgrounds, characterized by “a balanced counterpoint between top and bottom, foreground and background: the head offset by the neutral expanse of sky, and the neutral area of the shoulders enlivened by the landscape detail beyond”. Largely forgotten, Memling’s work received renewed attention and acclaim in the 19th century. Please enquire for photographs and for postage costs. Hardcover. (#233) $2,000.00
