[RR. PP. Oblats du Vicariat de la Baie d’Hudson]. Eskimo [Run of 56 Issues, Bound in One Volume]. Churchill, Manitoba: [RR. PP. Oblats du Vicariat de la Baie d’Hudson], May, 1946 – June-Sept, 1961. First Edition, First Printing. 8vo., measuring 9″ x 6″. Bound in bright red buckram over boards, gilt lettering to the spine. Some rubbing to the cloth extremities; excepting the rare ownership stamp (confined to only one or two pages), the overwhelming majority of the issues are entirely without blemish. Near fine. An exceedingly scarce offering of fifty-six issues of the French-language version of the similarly titled English periodical (“The Link/Eskimo) as published by The Oblate Fathers of The Hudson Bay Vicariate (RR. PP. Oblats du Vicariat de la Baie d’Hudson), all bound together in one volume, and comprising a near complete run from May, 1946 through to the June-Sept, 1961. Replete with black-and-white, and colour maps, photographs, illustrations, drawings, cartoons, et al. Comprising of a rich selection of oral histories of the Indigenous Peoples of the North, accounts of the Oblate missionaries in their efforts to convert them to Christianity, much detail on their customs, hunting and fishing techniques, “Arctic Mission Diaries” as written by the priests recounting their interactions with their flock, their Indigenous neighbours, and their colleagues. Although volumes of “Eskimo”, even the early ones, have been relatively common in the marketplace, runs such as our offering, and particularly in the French language are exceedingly uncommon.
