Unpaginated [pp. 76]. 12mo., measuring 16 cm tall. Light brown cloth over boards, illustrated colour plate affixed to centre of front board, slightly faded gilt lettering to the spine. Illustrated endpapers, accompanied with thirteen lovely colour plates, and black-and-white in-text line drawings by Hattie Longstreet, noted for her many wonderful children’s illustrations. Touch of edgewear, slight bumping to spine ends otherwise, a lovely well-preserved copy with tight, sound binding. Originally printed by The Penn Publishing Co. of Philadelphia in 1916, this is the later, though first, Canadian printing. Rare in commerce in such exceptional state. Charles Evans Kilbourne Jr., was the first American to earn the United States’ three highest military decorations. He was the recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Philippine–American War and served as a general officer during the First World War. Following World War I, he served as the Superintendent of the famed Virginia Military Institute, succeeding General John A. Lejeune, and had a post-military career as a distinguished writer.
