Founded in 1936 by the one-time mayor of Toronto, Leslie Howard Saunders (1899-1940), Protestant Action was a nativist, and firmly anti-Catholic journal which was loosely affiiliated with the Orange Order in Canada. Prior to his founding of Protesant Action, Saunders served as the business manager of The Sentinel, the Orange Order’s influential, twice-weekly publication from which he separated following differences, namely that the Sentinel did not take a sufficiently strong strong stance against Catholic-run Separate Schools. The “Text Book” openly sought to question, and undermine the influence of Catholics, their loyalty to the Canada, and the Empire as whole. Articles range from condemnations of Papal influence in political affairs, the supposed hypocrisy of Catholics on matters of marriage, religious persecution, the Pope’s supposed “divine power”, the Catholic Church’s apparent support for Hitler, with a particular focus on the the question of Catholic-run Separate Schools (which largely continues in Ontario to this day). No detectable flaws, contents bright, clean, and unmarked; fine. Exceedingly scarce, unrecorded in OCLC with no indication of the presence of this title in BAC/LAC, McGill, University of Toronto, et al. Rare indeed. Stapled Wraps. (#1627) $135.00
