Description

[Early Manitoba Photography / Woman with Three Young Children]; A.D. Cooper (Proprietor and Photographer). 19th Century Carte-de-visite of a Mother and her Three Young Children ; Captured and Printed by the Studios of A.D. Cooper of Virden (and Brandon), Manitoba. Virden, Manitoba, Canada [or, possibly Brandon, Manitoba]: A.D. Cooper, N.D. [Circa 1883-1900]. First Edition, First Printing. Black-and-white photograph measuring 10 cm x 14 cm, mounted on stiff boards measuring 11 cm x 16.5 cm. While, as expected, no date is printed, we can confidently surmise that the photograph could only have been captured between the years of 1883-1900, when the propriertor, A.D. Cooper, was active in the town of Virden and the city of Brandon [Source: the Manitoba Historical Society; MHS Resources: Manitoba Photographers, 1858 to Present]. A, not uncommon, photograph for this period depicting a stern-looking mother with her three young children (one daughter, and two boys), with the children standing atop a raised platform, no doubt, furnished by the studios of the photographer. Excepting some light edgwear, and one small crease to the left corner of the board, both photograph and board remain quite well-preserved; very good+. Card Covers. We could not locate any instances of the photography prodcued by the studios of A.D. Cooper amongst the holdings of the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections, BAC/LAC, Peel, et al.
